Where is Sapa?

Sapa is a small, mountain town in Lao Cai Province. It is located about 350 km northwest of Hanoi, close to the Chinese border. Here’s where you’ll find the Hoang Lien Son range of mountains, which includes Fan Si Pan—the country’s highest peak.

This quiet Vietnamese town is home to different ethnic tribal groups. There are five main ethnic groups in Sapa: the Hmong, Dao, Tay, Giay and Xa Pho. It is said that Sapa was first occupied by the first four groups, since the Vietnamese from the lowlands (better known as the Kinh) did not colonise the highest valleys.

These days, Sapa welcomes a diverse range of visitors, attracted by the highland tribes, iconic rice paddies and forest treks. The whole area is blessed with awe-inspiring natural beauty.

Sapa weather

Thanks to its geographic condition, Sapa has one of the most favourable climates in Vietnam. The temperature remains stably cool throughout the year though winter may see more severe changes, with frost and even snow (mostly from mid-December to mid-January).

Humidity is relatively high all year round, between 83-87% and temperature ranges within 15-30 Celcius degree. If you include Sapa in your itinerary, make sure to bring some warm clothes since it can get quite cold at night (see packing tips for Sapa).

How hot is Sapa?

Not very, in comparison with Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City. Thanks to its high altitude, Sapa is an ideal location for summer retreat during the overheated summer time and the scarcely populated town also has pretty fresh air.

How wet is Sapa?

Be prepared to bring rain coat if visiting during summer time too, since there is infrequent showers. In the winter, fog and frost often make it cold enough to keep yourself warm with rain- and wind-proof outwears.

Best time to visit Sapa

In the summer, Sapa is a popular escape destination for domestic travellers, which may hamper the authentic and original experience of the town. This high season often falls between June and August.

In contrast, March-May and September- November are the two recommended periods to visit Sapa if you want a more laid-back natural and rejuvenating holiday.

September is the harvesting season in Sapa so get your camera charged in full or else you will regret every single step you walk.

The best thing in Sapa

Fansipan Trekking is the best expencience when travelling to Sapa. Fansipan is called as “the Roof of Indochina” with the height of 3143m, the highest peak of the Indochina Peninsula. Although the summit of Fansipan is less than half of Mount Everest, this place is a good choice for those who are eager to conquer high peaks and test their muscular power. It would be proud when you conquer a mountain at the tail end of Himalayas.

It’s definitely not an easy trek but it promises marvelous views of the Hoang Lien mountain range and pristine natural beauty. Climbers have chance to explore the diverse flora, enjoy beautiful orchids and wild flowers along the way or listen to the musical concert of insects.
